Growth Spots?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They seem to come and grow on my rays.. this other thread said something about growth spots and the pigmentation filling in after time. That seems to be the case, but my growth spots are dark, and the others were white? Maybe this is a species specific trait!! haha okay maybe not

My flower has a couple small spots like that a long with a small fleshy flap on the edge of her disk. I will try to get a pic but it looks like a 1/8" wide growth like you see on the tip of most all rays nose but it is on the side of her disk.

Anything? (<-fat like gr8karma)

Perhaps the growth marks are like acne with teenagers? Once they are about to mature the increase in hormones, etc. thus effecting their skin?

Anybody know at what age the growth marks begin? Before or after their claspers drop?

Just a thought, I will now go back to eating some popcorn...

i was under the impression that when people refer to growth spots they are talking about the small spots around the disk edge that correspond with the rest of the marking on the ray

or is that growth ring

My friends and S.Korea breeders know that is growth spot.
(Growth spot isn't scientific name, just...nickname...)
Anyway, We have experience it many times for several yearl.
But we don't got any probelm and think that is totally non-harmful.

As a similar case , Do you have seen guppy tail's edge in growth period?
Guppy tail's edge in growth period is colorness and transparent.
Pigmentation is slower than cell divsion when the fish grow up fast.
So~ The faster grow up The more colorness.
I guess this is the why.

I think this spot isn't growth spot. I don't kow what it is.
Growth spot is only white but this spot is black.

I have a pic of ray with growth spot. I think this is growth spot.
Do your ray have growth spot? Don't worry about it.

My Englis is not so good.

Bruce still has those marks..they form an odd pattern..doesnt seem to bug him, so I leave them. Squishy has nothing like them. You would think if they are in the same tank they would share it if it was fungus or parasites

i have 4 rays all wild caught, 3 retics and a marble motoro. 2 of the retics have these marks and have had them almost since i got them. im guessing they are just growth marks. i am also wondering if this is species specific. i have heard of this on multiple occassions and every time its been a retic thats had these.
