I decided to finally set up the 2250 I have had sitting around for 6 months so that I could double up my FX5s on the downstairs tank like they originally were. Much to my great surprise... it leaks. Out the top, between the lid and the bucket. Greased it up, turned it back on... it made it five minutes and started again.

My 2028 got its third new O ring (after my last thread encouraged me), and now instead of that leaking (I'm not gonna lie: it was thrilling to fix the o-ring and have it take. Last time I must've pinched it, cause it didn't work), now it is leaking from the corners and the edge between lid and canister.

My 2017 doesn't leak, but the damn thing has had bubbles hiding in it for months and no amount of effort, including breaking the entire thing down and re-seating the media (a real pain), has solved it. And yes, for a while, it did leak.

I have the worst luck with these things.

Never had a problem with any other canisters... just these Eheims.

Is there some trick to creating a perfect seal between the top and canister that has somehow eluded me?

Update: the 2028 is not collecting even a drop in those side holes where it always leaked from the O ring. So that's good news. The bad news is that it's drizzling quickly out the back from the seam between top and can. when I disconnect the in/out tubes, I can see the glisten of standing water down below inside there. Though that may be normal. I don't know. It leaked about 2 gallons out of the tank in the last hour.

On try #3, the 2250 now appears to only be leaking at the junction of the lid and the inlet to the pump (which is really weak, btw). If everything else but that is set that actually doesn't worry me. I ought to be able to unscrew that joint and tape it up and hopefully solve it. Fingers crossed.

The problem is that this is being used as a closed loop filter from the bottom of an overflow, and I don't have the ball valves in there. So there's quite a bit of work and delicate maneuvering every time I need to switch it out.

Great. After nearly a full day of this, I gave up and tried hooking up the original FX5, but now one of the plumbing connections to it is no longer staying flush, so now that's leaking too. And my biomedia has been inert for hours. And this is my discus tank. And I have no idea how I'm going to filter it.

I have the magic touch, I tell you. JK47 spends 8 hours working on fish tanks and ends up with masterpieces. I spend 8 hours and end up ruining an established tank that was working just fine til I started working on it.

Well just to make you feel better, I know JK47 personally and we have both helped set up each others tanks, he spends far more than 8 hours sometimes. ;) His 120 he recently set up was a nightmare, those bulkheads leaked for weeks.

new clip maybe? thats all my pro 2 needed

Not a good sign, when you spend a great deal of time and effort only to be worse off than you started.
Really don`t think it`s the Eheim` s that are the big problem in this.
Have you check your hands?
There is only a single thumb on each, right?

I've had over 50 (yep 50) Eheims over the years .....

I've never had one leak

Eheims are ovarrated outdated and ovarpriced

I have 3 2217s, two of them are >15yrs old, and none of them leak.

And they can hold a bubble at the top, but that has no effect on their performance.
