Grrr.... are there any Eheims that DON'T eventually start leaking?

Sort of off topic now, but the poster was, at least, basically correct. Vaseline is a petroleum based product and will deteriorate Buna rubber based o-rings over time. But, from what I have experienced, Vaseline will "attack" an old, hard o-ring just enough to soften it back up and make it usable again. I just restored my old, leaky Magnum 350 by cleaning and wiping Vaseline on all the seals.

Theoretically, you shouldn't use it. Real life, it works really well :)

OK, sorry...back on topic!

I'm just telling you from experience, vaseline might work for others, but its only caused me trouble. Using the thick silicone grease really fixes seals, I use it on everything that has a O-ring. Its saved a few dives as well.

I'm not super familiar with the gasket, but you could probably pick up some neoprene rubber sheet for 1$/sqr foot and make one, worst case you are out 1$.
Also most hardware stores (specifically Ace) have a huge rack filled with o-rings, if you bring a eheim o-ring with you, you can probably find a suitable replacement for cheap.

Another alternative to Vaseline:

Nothing.

I didn't do anything, but the filter stopped leaking. The water in the 10g never exceeded a half inch and has totally evaporated. Weird.

i have the 2080, i had it for 4 years and never used it because it didnt fit under my dresser i got a new tank and taller dresser to fit it and now i'm using it for about 4 months now, at first it leaked so what i did was put petroleum jelly on the seals it helps it seal when locking it down... do 2 latches at a time which you should have 4, after i did all that it stopped leaking and i cleaned it twice since and still no leaks!

Just like anything under pressure, it will eventually leaks.
All type of cannister filter all r sealed and r under pressure, so yeah they will do leak .
But usually the culprit is the rubber gasket that's got old and detiorated, simple rubber gasket replacement should fix the problem

Not to hijack but I'd there any special way to put the giant O seal on, I Haven't set mine up to run yet but I just fit the ring in the grove on the lid. Is there any thing else I need to do ??

I have used a popsicle stick or a blunt edge tool to push the lid o-ring in place. No sharp or pointy objects that will damage the o-ring. I do apply a light film of silicone grease or regular vaseline to the o-ring prior to installation or during maintenance.
