All you need is more circulation in your tank, couple of power heads to sweep the crap off the sand toward the filter intake.
Sand is going to show more poop than gravel, just the way it is. I was bothered by it too at first, but you just get used to it. My husband even thinks it looks more natural with some "stuff" on the sand.
I still get a net out and scoop up the ray poop between water changes, but I've learned to live with the rest.
Get a power head or two to move the water down there so your filters can take it out of the tank. Whether you have sand or barebottom, your still going to have fish/food waste on the bottom of the tank with out any movement down there.
i was taking the dogs for a walk after my original posting, and while walking across one of the streams near my apartment, i saw a good amount of decent sized rocks, so i think i am going to add 6-8" circular river rocks to kind of break up the monotony of the tank, as well as hide some of the poop on the bottom.
i may also mix in some darker sand, so that if its not all tan, the poop wont be so noticable ...
noticable or not.. its still going to be there... either way breaking up monotony is a good thing...
powerheads are great fo getting poop off the bottom.. a lil diy on the intake for yer filter to get it to sit closer to the bottom may also help....
poop sucking is part of the joy of sand.... other than that... either get taller, get a stepping stool or get a shorter stand.. my gf loves her stepping stool...
sand has its ups and downs, i think its alright, i have both and and gravel, i think the sand kind of makes the fish look bland, when i upgrade in a year or at least change venues i will change my SA tank back to gravel
I agree with the bland part, for Freshwater fish anyway. I recently started my first sand substrate tank and the fish look so dark! Even my blue and green Crayfish looks dull.
