GT aggression level?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dang those are some mixed replies it seems that the green terror is one whos temper cannot be generalized whatsoever, and that it truly depends on the fish,no?

The reason I ask this question is this:

I have a 175 gallon pre-formed pond (the home depot style) inside my living rrom and it had two oscars (about 8"albino and 12"tiger) that somone offered me $75 for and they were instantly his.:screwy:

now I want to try a cichlid comunity of some of the milder tempered cichlids (meaning anything less agro than say a RD or a Jag).
the planned inhabitants were:

1 GT
1 FM
1 JD
1 CON
1GEO
1 Oscar
and a gold sev.

would that work in a 175?I suppose my planned stocklist needs to be modified because last night at petco I found GT's and FM's for $2 each so I now have 2 1" GT's and a 1" FM.....

GT's are not that aggresive @ all

no there no norm that bad, none i have had in the past have been a prob with my mixed cic tanks, i think this 1 i have now must have been droped a few time's:screwy:

My EBJD is a mean little SOB he bullies a Jewel Cichlid more than twice his size.

My Gibbicepts kicks his ass though :D

well I might be inclined to believe that as so far my 1" firemouth is king of the tank, constantly picking on the GT's even though they have more bulk.they stay together all the time.(the two gt's)

I cant find any of the other cichlids on my stocklist at a small enough size to introduce right now. With my FM being 1" and my GT's being slightly over, when do you guys figure it would be safe to add an oscar of maybe 3"?

lol well while my GT's are constantly on the run from my FM you guys where right about them not getting along with eachother, not even at 1" long (makes me wonder how anybody ever breeds these guys).

In the end one of the GT's wound up in my african tank and is trying to establish dominance there even though he is half the size of the next smallest cichlid.

Do you guys figure the water is too hard for him or are GT's hardy little suckers?

what I wanted to do was grow him out with the africans and leave the other in the other tank and see who has the best colors and trade in the other.

I have an 8 inch GT and a 7 inch RD and the GT absolutely whips him man, my GT has eaten about 12 of my fish through out time and used to beat on a JD i had so bad that i had to hospitalize it and then sell it back as i couldn't keep it in a 29 gal for it's whole life. however i have had a small 3-4 inch parrot fish and a 4inch convict in the tank with the GT and he coulnd't care less i don't entirely get it i guess he just doesn't see them as threats

JD and GT aggression is overrated.

Ive heard that too with JD's beign nothign like the rep they have. I had a Gt for abotu a year that started out fine, no aggression whatsoever, then all of a sudden he started to live up to his name and I sold him on. I guess its all down to the individual fish.
