Here is what I am thinking of feeding my Goldsaum GTs:

They will be 2"ers when I get them, my LFS should have them in Wed or Thurs. When they are small I plan on feeding HBH Oscar Bites Micro Pellets in the morning and frozen bloodworms and/or high carotene Betta flakes in the evening.

Once they are large enough, I plan on feeding them Hikari Gold Pellets in the morning and mealworms gut-loaded with carrots in the evening, with the occasional snack of frozen krill or live ghost shrimp.

I have heard that it is best to feed cichlids a high fiber food, such as pellets, in the morning as cichlids have short digestive tracks and the fiber and crude protein slow it down so the "live food" fed in the evenings can be fully digested and the nutrients absorbed. Is there any truth to this or is it just BS? I want to feed a high carotene diet to bring out the orange in the dorsal and tail fins of the GTs.

Does this seem like a sound plan or does someone have any suggestions?

Don't feed them so much live food. They could get hooked on it, and you'll have to starve them to get them to eat pellets again.

I feed my GT twice a day, with Hikari cichlid gold. But every other day, I give him either frozen brine shrimp or earthworms for one meal.

you guys go to crazy with preparing the diet. just give them hikari pellets and spirulina. they dont have people gut loading and picking specific diets for them in the wild. and i think hikari has all the proteins it needs.

trust me my GT had no colors (bad genes). i fed him hikari gold but during the first week of feeding him spirulina, his green came out all over his body. now hes really green but he wont be like the ones that are naturally super green. you dont gotta worry about the orange on teh dorsal fin.

With all due respect popcorn they don't have Hikari Gold pellets in the wild either :D. But I see what you are saying, I know he'd do more than adequate on Hikari alone, i was just wondering if anyone has had sucess with gut loaded mealworms, or has seen results with feeding a carotene rich diet in GTs. Maybe I could gut load with carrots and spirulina. I overlooked the spirulina for the green. Thanks

The most noticeable change in colour, size and shape I have had with my guy is after making Hikari Massivore Delite the main base to his diet.I feed this every 2nd day.The other days he gets market shrimp/prawns,meal worms here and there, fish fillets occasionally. He was a picky when it came to Hikari Gold pellets but he can't get enough of the Massivore.I have also seen more growth with the massivore. The first pic is prior to Massivore Delite,The 2nd is more recent. The pics were shot with 2 different cams but you get the idea:)

:WHOA:Holy crap! That GT is a chunk! how old and big is he?! I have seen good sized nuchal humps on Saums before but it looks like he is hiding a tennis ball up there! Great looking fish, I will definately look into Massivore as a staple alternative to gold, maybe try feeding one and than the other. Thanks for sharing the pics, and the youtube videos are great. Nice collection:D

thats great, thanks Green

Hikari Gold and NLS pellets is what I feed mine. Occasional frozen brine shrimp. My GT is 7" with great color and very healthy. Your feeding schedule is kind of complicated but not necessary.
