Purchased this guy in early March at 1.5". He is now a hair over 3" and really starting to get aggressive (flares his gills at me, charges the glass, etc). My guess is that it's a male, but wanted some feedback. His color is really starting to pop, but doesn't yet have any trailers on his dorsal/anal fins. Thoughts?

I was gonna say male based off of the colors.
I've never had a female with that distinct of colors at that size

the colors say male but the fins say female I would say a colorful little girl.

I agree on the fin shape looking more like a female. However, I also know that the fin extensions can develop at a later size (4"+). In looking at its vent, it's very thin and pointed (male trait?). Also, I've read that females grow much slower than the males in this particular species. I would think a female wouldn't have grown this quick in such a short time. Either way, I'm very happy with the fish (whether it's male or female). I just thought I would share these observations.

My guess is female, a male wouldn't have such a rounded belly like that. At 3" I would have expected more orange in the fins, a start of a nuchal hump and some trailers. Also, i would have expected the black line to have dissapeared at 3" were it male. So it is either a very well fed, late blooming male, or a very colourful female. As i say my guess is female.

On a side note - it's a beauty!

Thanks! He/she is definitely very well fed. I guess I assumed it was male based off of aggression, coloration, and growth rate. Hopefully it will be more definitive in another month.

I was also wrong in my measurment. He/she is closer to the 2.5" mark, rather than 3" (not sure if this makes a difference).

I still say female. Due to the shape. But give it a month or two and you'll be able to get a definate sex. :D

I wouldn't really base anything off of color. My Female BGT has super bright colors and my male BGT has dull colors. From the way the fins look I would say female. But at that size you never truely know. Once the growth spurt happens you'll know the sex real quick.
