GT + JD + 55g = ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally wouldn't put a GT in a 55 gallon unless it was a grow out.

The only way I see this working is if they are both females, because then you have the chance of them remaining 8" or under. Even then you still have to worry about them getting along. I would say your chances are pretty slim.

the JD and GT need somthing bigger than a 55g.I had many JDs and 55 is to small.JD get deformed in a small tank.

I don't see that working, but there's really no hard and fast rule of what will or will not work, as long as the water changes are kept up with. Good thing he's got an mfk-er on staff to be his tank-cleaning b#### right? lol jk

...so no one here has more than a single 3" JD or GT in a 55g tank?

As someone who's personally grown out a bred large pairs of both GTs and JDs in 55g tanks, it's fine as long as the fish get along. Otherwise, divide the tank...

Well yeah a 55 gallon is great for JDs & GTs that are 3". However this will not work in the long run when the GT reaches 8-11", and the JD reaches 6-10". IMHO a 55 gallon is too small for fish that get longer than 9".

looks to me like the OP is talking about long-term, not grow-outs . . .

obviously you can keep multiple 3" fish in a 55G, but if we're talking about full grown GT and JD, then it is not a very promising idea . . .

I've got a JD in a 55 gallon and wanted to add another fish. I got a few people at the LFS that said it would be ok. Going to better fish stores looking for that fish to add to my tank, I got the opposite response. I set to the MFK site and joined and received the same answers here- is it possible? Yes. Is it a good idea? Not so much.

Not even whether the 2 fish get along at a later age, at full grown the tank will be overstocked. I then considered going with a JD female for my male JD as females stop growing after they mate. I then was talked out of that by another fish store owner. JD's in the wild are not schooling fish, if you're not planning on mating them (and I'm not), there's no reason to put a female in there. JD's hang out alone in the wild, they don't need company but to mate.

It's very possible your bosses JD and GT will get along because they're growing up together, but to maximize each fishes potential, I think it's important to give more room than 55 gallons to two fish of the size of a GT and JD at full size. There are other possibilities as far as fish go if he's insistent on more than one fish in the tank, but I wouldn't keep them two species he has in such tight quarters (based on full grown size alone).
