I've always really liked salvini and a LFS a few miles away actually has a couple of them in right now but I've heard they're very timid and I don't want to pick up a fish that's going to be hiding all day and consequently causing my other fish to follow suit.

i never herd of they being timid but in my 300 g community they are always out competing i have 2 large males the biggest around 7-8" and thick and one female plus 2 small survivors from a spawn. i can hand feed the males and this is a 7' tank.

Get a true festae or a real red Texas cichlid that's already faded? But your gonna pay more $money$ for those fish! Both are better looking than a GT. (that's just my opinion) But it's your call on what to replace your GT with. Goodluck
True festaes are beautiful! A friend of mines own a mating pair, they display great colouration its incredible

A juvie Salvini and Sajica is definitely a possibility I'm looking into right now if I'm going to stick with fish in the 5-8" range.

I love the look of a festae, but how are their personalities? Very aggressive I know, but in terms of their interaction with the keeper.

Very aggressive for sure especially when mating. I think each one has their own personalities, also wild caught specimens tend to show more aggression and tend to be more timid than tank raised. From what i have seen though, at lease when ever my buddy feeds them, they aren't timid at all but are very competitive. Maybe it's the food he feeds them the guy made it himself, from what he told me its mainly shrimp with salmon.

Two more ideas I've been considering:

-Vieja Argentea
-FH (never thought I'd consider getting one but they've grown on me considerably over the past few weeks)

Too much for your tank IMO, Argentea get very big and nasty. If you liked the GT get another one. Sajica are cool fish but will breed with your cons, Salvini are nice but may not like the JD. I would stay with somthing in the middle of both size and aggression.

I would be buying the argentea as a juvenile and letting it grow in my 72 for a couple of weeks, however well before it became anywhere close to full grown he would be in a tank to himself.

What's everyone's take on a Green Texas or Cuban in place of the deceased GT?

Cubans are awesome fish!!!! I have a breeding pair in my community tank with alot of different cichlids. Green Texas cichlids are great fish also, i got a male and female Escondido carpintis that have amazing pearls, from Cichlid Connection. Order your fish there, great people! I still say try a festae.

Well it's been a busy week to say the least but I think I've finally got my tanks set.

I picked up a baby 1" Flowerhorn from my LFS and put him in the 72 with my 2" EBJD (just for the time being, they seem to be getting along well enough but at the first sign of aggression from the FH the EBJD will be moved).

Also picked up a very nice looking 2.5" male pink con with a nice hump already sprouting. Going to be breeding him with my black female in the 30 for the time being.
