Tips from me would be: provide pristine water, good quality varied diet, large cold water changes (30-50%), provide them with a flat rock placed at 45 degrees, provide lots of hiding places for the female too. But most importantly patience is key. Its not like convicts. Also, just because you have a male and female doesnt mean you have a pair. That is why conditioning the female is vital. I also found my female wouldnt breed until the male was significantly larger (twice her size for me).
A pleco should be fine, just keep an eye on him if they do lay eggs, when they are new to parenthood the plec might take some of the eggs. Other than that, they will do a great job of keeping him and anything else away.
