I have a 2.5 inch GT, unknown sex. It is in a 29 right now, but I will get a larger tank, probably a 75, later. What fish can go with it? I am hoping to put at least 1 other cichlid in with it. Or, would it be happy alone in a 55?
I also need help figuring out if its male or female. It is colorful for a 2.5 inch fish (I think) with gold edges on the tail and dorsal fin, and the pelvic fins are yellow. I'll post a picture if I can.
thanks

It would be happy alone in a 55, OR in a 75 with another fish. There is occasionally a psycho GT but for he most part they are docile. males can get to about 10", and females to 8", but it takes a while. And by a while, I mean years. Males can supposedly hit 12" but i have only ever seen one over 10" in my life. Chances are yours will top at 10".

By the way, these guys are slooooow growers. Dont get any cichlids that will outgrow and outcompete it.

I posted a thread on another forum and people told me it would probably gain around 3 inches in 6 months. I am hoping to wait until next christmas to get a larger tank, but I will get it sooner if it gets too big before then.
what fish would be compatible? I thought texas cichlids might be nice. How aggressive are Midas? When I get more fish I will grow them out in a 29, so they don't get eaten.

it would do fine alone in a 55

It would do fine in a 55g. If you want to put it in a 75g with another fish you should wait for it to grow. They are extremely slow growers. I have had one for 2 years now and it's just barely 5-6 in. If you feed it all the time you can get it to grow faster.

Really? I thought GTs were very aggressive. Is it because another agressive fish would refuse to submit? Then they would constantly fight, I suppose.

If it is going to grow super slow, how long can I keep it in the 29?

They can be aggressive. My experience is that if you grow out a midas or Jag with a full grown GT it can work. If you try growing them out together the GT might end up on the bottom of the totem poll.

I am trying to figure out what is compatible, but people on different forums contradict what I here on this forum. So really I don't know what to do. Luckily, I have a year to decide. Maybe I'll get an angel pair for my other 29 so I don't get bored. Or maybe rams...or maybe I'll when the lottery and build 50,000 gallons of aquarium in my backyard. maybe...
