GT tankmates/tank size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From my experience, putting one in a 55 with other fish [catfish, plecs, loaches etc]doesn't seem to cause too many problems, so long as those other fish are not cichlids.

I agree with what's been said so far. If you want to put in with aggressives like devils and texas, you need to wait and let this guy/girl grow out quite a bit, then add smaller rd, tex(more so the rd). If you woud like to put it with others sooner, you should look more toward jd, fm, and as said geos, and other calmer varieties. In the end you should be fine with any of the mentioned. You should be good in the 29 for a while (with the gt).

Two female cons and a GT in a 55 worked for me. For another fish that gets to similar length and girth of a GT, then go 75, 90, or 120 (all 4 foot tanks). I would add the cons first and let them make their little pecking order then put in the GT.

I couldn't get a GT, JD, Oscar, and FH to live together until I increased their tank size to an 8 foot 240. Other people have better luck with different combinations of stocking and sizes. It just depends on whether the fish wants to be a jerk or not. You just need to have a plan to relocate or return any hyper aggressive fish.

Now I am thinking I might get a 6 foot, 125 gallon. It won't be for another year though. :(

I have a 2.5 inch GT, unknown sex. It is in a 29 right now, but I will get a larger tank, probably a 75, later. What fish can go with it? I am hoping to put at least 1 other cichlid in with it. Or, would it be happy alone in a 55?
I also need help figuring out if its male or female. It is colorful for a 2.5 inch fish (I think) with gold edges on the tail and dorsal fin, and the pelvic fins are yellow. I'll post a picture if I can.
thanks
get an oacar and a 90g tank
both of them can live if the GT doesn't bother the oscar

A 90 is the same footprint as a 75.

Green terrors, like stated are relatively slow growers. He may put on a couple of inches quickly, but once they hit about 5 inches, their growth really slows down. I would say that you should be able to keep him in the 30 for a while, but be diligent about keeping the water clean.

Compatibily is really dependent upon each individual fish. What works for one person might not work for you, and vice versa. I'm sure this is why you are getting conflicting advice. In general green terrors are fairly docile. They are very capable of defending themselves, but typically aren't looking for a fight. You can keep them with smaller, less aggressive cichilds with success more often than you can with large aggressive cichlids. But like I said, different things work for everyone.

My advice to you, is to wait until you have a larger tank, and then decide if you want to add tankmates. By that time you will have an idea of the fish's personality and how well it will tolerate tankmates. :D

I must have one of the rare ones then, I bought him in june and he was about 1" he is now over 5" . He's in a 125 gal with a 10" RD, 8" tex hybrid, and a 5" jag and he is 2nd on the pole behind the red devil. He is the most aggressive in the tank and controls almost half of the realestate.

I'm considering putting him in with my 6" tex female in a 55 by themselves and see what happens . she has proven herself several times with My RD.

He definatly lives up the the name.

I might get a 55 pretty soon then, and get a big tank later on.
