Also, I wouldn't starve a fish ...ever. Doesn't sound like good fish keeping to me, However, I will go a day or two and let them get real hungry and then offer the pellets only. This may be worth a shot too as they are opportunistic feeders in the wild

Mine will come to top every time I go near the tank but he wont take a pellet,I'll keep trying...

Thanks for your help MFK's

Sometimes its necessary to starve fish to get them on a proper diet. Many cichlids can be picky eaters. I guess its not starving them if you offer food and they just plain don't eat it.

I second what TFG says about the adults. I feed my adult O's once a day, and typically go home on weekends, so they go 2 days a week without being fed... and somehow they are still fat and lazy.

If I go on vacation for under 2 weeks my cichlids don't get fed. They don't even look skinny when I come back, just beg a lot.

Yeah :grinyes: :grinyes:

my fish seem more personable when they're hungry, so I've been cutting back to once per day and sometimes twice. Not twice EVERY day anymore. I can see doing that type of feeding when they're 1-2" but once they start getting big I think once per day is perfect.

Mine seemed to lay around in their usual hideouts when they're fed a lot so once I cut back they're out and about more. Makes the tank much more active and enjoyable IMO. AND of course its cleaner too:D

might want to try garlic extract also.

yea this is one of the only appetite inducers that i have heard of! whether or not it works i dont know! but it should havea ny harmful effects! but try starving him before going to the "extreme" of giving him this!

if anyone can offer up any experience with garlic extraact i'd be more ready to try it! but it is your call what to do with the options available!
