I think far too many keepers ignore one of the most obvious substrates out there... Why not just use soil? It's worked great for everyone using it, for almost any species. You're hard pressed to find a bad review. Plus, plants grow quite well in what they're evolved to grow in...

I use a 50/50 sand/soil mix in all of my enclosures.
 
and you are also hard pressed to find soil without cow manure or fertilizer in it
 
Home improvement stores typically sell "fill dirt" that works well for reptiles. It contains no manure or fertilizers and is typically the cheapest dirt they sell, usually around $1.30. The other option is to harvest some soil from your own yard (if you can trust it).
 
no way to trust any yard soil with GTP's. Sorry.
