What makes a fish a "guapote"?

From my understanding, it's an open water predatory cichlid. But does it have to be Central/South American? If so, then are pbass guapotes?

What comes to mind are Parachromis and red bay snooks.

List all guapotes and everything you know about them heree.

I was under the impression that Guapote was the spanish common name of Dovii. They are also called Rainbow Bass in the fishing world.

and Jaguar Guapote were P. managuense

I may be wrong

As far as I've read in TFH's Cichlid handbook all of the parachromis group fall under this name category "quapote" and thats it. Jag, wolf, freddy, loiselle, and mota. Open water predatory cichlid just means they are classified as a piscivore or predator by nature which includes other cichlids like the red snook.

I guess I was wrong about the snook. I'm pretty sure the book I have doesn't have the snook a guapote but apparently it should. I just moved so I'll have to locate it and see.

But it's easier just to ask questions here than to read the article

Seriously though, Cichlid Room Companion (cichlidae.com) is such an awesome resource! Anyone really interested in cichlids should consider membership...well worth it!

Seriously, read the article by Dr. Paul Loiselle above. He classifies P.splendida in with the Parachromis as "guapotes".
