anyway thats a nice palmas palmas there. like B.K. said, substrate affects how they look. Also, variations among individuals plays a big role (similar thing with buettikoferi as well). e.g. below are some of mine for reference (pics show actual color). and lastly, you just got your fish, so it hasn't quite settled, although ime its only a minor factor compared to those mentioned above. regardless, its the prettiest bichir in my book

Are palmas palmas known to jumper? These palmas were going psycho trying to jump out. No other tankmates is harrassing it or bothering them. Thank god the tank was all covered up.
Joe have you ever thought of changing from gravel to flourite black sand? It would make your palmas get dark like in the third pic.
After thirty minute in the tank mine got dark already! So did the little beutti, but it's in a smaller tank with eco complete.

No need to because my other palmas in the big tank got dark just like in the pic. I think it was tan bare bottom that made the palmas so light earlier. My gravel is pretty dark already.
