Heat pads DO work well for boas and pythons, however, you really REALLY need to hook it up to a thermostat in order to use them safely.
Most people go to the pet store and buy those Zoo-Med heat mats, stick it to the bottom of the cage, and plug it into the wall.
The problem is that over time, the material that it is made of wears and can develop very very hot spots on it, as opposed to being evenly heated when it was new. These hot spots, left unchecked, can burn your snake. I've seen too many boas and pythons with burnt bellies from pet store heat mats.
You can avoid this by using a thermostat or a dimmer. Controlling the electrical current going to the mat extends the life of it and reduces the instance of those hot spots that can develop on the pad.
For boas, a warm area of about 90 is really all you need. You can do that with a heat lamp or a pad (w/thermostat), either works fine.
