i think 16% of a typical household's electric bill is way too high, i think you calculated something wrong. because as stated, only your heaters will draw anything noticeable power. everything else will be equivalent to running a single lightbulb 24hrs a day

i honestly think you may have messed up on ur calcs. My parents used to have me pay for the water i used. but i was only allowed 1 tank, and i had to fight for a sump. consider youself lucky.

16% of the total bill for a 125 and a 20?

can you post the calcs? are you sure you did the math right?

the only thing that draws any significant power at all are the heaters.

and even then its only a few hundred watts that are hardly on most of the time..

Hrmmmm, i was surprise also, maybe i miss cal

well i did choose to overestimate the hours.

Monthly Cost = (wattage) x (charge/kwh) x (hours/day) x 30 x .001

Using this equation, my kwH rate is 0.182

20G
8.6w x .182kwH x 24hrs x 30 x .001 = 1.20x2 ($2.40) two filters
55w x 0.182 x 12hrs x 30 x 0.001 = ($3.70) Heater
96w x 0.182 x 10hrs x 30 x 0.001 = ($6.40) 24x4 Lighting

= $12.50 per month alone for a 20G

99w x 0.182 x 24hrs x 30 x 0.001 = ($13.00) Filters and the UV
300w x 0.182 x 10hrs x 30 x 0.001 = ($16.40) Heater
140w x 0.182 x 8hrs x 30 x 0.001 = ($7.70) Lighting

= $37.10 per month 125G

total = $49.6x3 ($148.8 quarterly) wrong?

I was wondering what an average cost is for a fifty five tank with two lights, heater and filter, and a twenty gallon with a light, filter and heater would be? I'm moving into a new apartment soon and my landlord wants to charge me extra for the tanks. I was wondering what a reasonable charge is for those two. Thanks!

while ur clac seems good. numbers are def off. 50 bucks a month for those 2 is no were near correct. I run a 125, 40, two 10s, a 20 and a 25 and my elec bill(plus i have a well so water is pumped to my house so that uses elec when i do WC) is only 80 bucks a month

i sorta have the same guilt:( so if you dont have a job get one!! ha i start mine tomorow at 10 30 in the morning to MIDNIGHT to save up for a tank, so thats a 14 hour shift and im 16 both days of the weekend o well ima have a 180 gallon :D

your calcs are correct but your hour estimates for your heaters are way off.

you budgeted 10 and 12 hours per day for your heaters to run when in reality, assuming normal room temps, they probably are only actually run from 2 - 3 hours total per day.

so instead of costing $16 per month to run a 300w heater in reality it is probably only costing you $3 or $5 per month.

the other thing that is unusual for your setups is the number of watts of light over your 20g tank.

96w of light over a 20g tank is a TON of light, even for plants. thats almost 5w per gallon.

your lights alone on that tank use more wattage than most peoples entire 20g setups, so your numbers are going to run higher than the average person's 20g setup.

Do your parents complain????

they dont. We (family) think having an aquarium is a lively and entertaining addition. We love fishkeeping (i do all the keeping btw)

So... 125G, well insulated with complete hood cover, lighting disbursing heat and a room temp difference of 50f,10c degrees, my 300w heater WONT be running for 10hrs per day?

a way overestimate?
other numbers are fixed...

no it wont be. he is right 2 to 3 hours(maybe 4) is a substationally better estimate. again all my tanks running and all the other stuff and mine is 70 to 80.

parents took the responsibility weather willing or unwilling to care for and raise the child youre good.
