Two mining deaths today in my home state of KY as well.
We do need to move towards alternate/cleaner energy sources but as of now, oil is the cheapest energy available and until an energy source is found that is cheaper then oil, we are stuck with it. Oil by FAR yields the most $$$ per dollar. It would be relatively easy to convert the energy in our homes to other sources but it would cost billions, maybe trillions, to replace ever oil consuming vehicle/machine to an alternate energy source. This wont happen in our life time nor our childrens life time.
Also, I will bet that the these alternate energy sources will most likely still be owned and operated by the giants in the oil industry today. Not that that is a bad thing of course. I just wouldnt be surprised that in the next 50-100 years we are refueling our vehicles with an energy source provided by BP or Chevron!!
Atomic energy is WAY under utilized in this country. However, just like the oil industry, accidents can happen and truth is, an atomic disaster could make all the oil spills and all the mining deaths combined look small.
