im curious about a Gulper cat's compatibility with my current stock.

the Gulper cat will be 6'' approximately..

stock is:

- 1X Motoro stingray Approximately 7'' in diameter (12-13'' from top of disc to tail)

- 3X Bichirs 8''

tank is a 120 gallon 48'' 24'' 24''.

no decor at all..

substrate is 3M Color Quartz s grade.

Filtration is FX5 and Eheim 2028 pro 2. i also have a 1200 GPH powerhead.

so is it a go for a gulper???

thanks.

the gulper will for sure eat the bichirs and most likely eat or attempt to eat the ray, so I would wait till u move the ray to a bigger tank cause it will outgrow a 120, then get the gulper

that's what i was originally planning. i just wanted to get more opinions and hopefully learn more about the gulper.

If u search around u will find a thread about a gulper that ate an arowana almost twice it's size

Gulpers are mostly best kept as a species only tank with same size gulpers too they will eat each other if they can. Anything that's big enough for a gulper to not be able to eat usually becomes a threat to the gulper.

Otherwise if you don't mind the risk of losing the fish throw em in, but don't be surprised if the fish you thought was way to big for the gulper to eat becomes a meal.

Gulpers are deceptively clumsy also. They swim like oafs barging through the water with their sloppy wobble but when it comes time to strike at food they don't mess around and if they connect there's virtually no escaping.

I've only kept Convict Cichlids (fry growouts mainly) with my gulpers and the cons are at least smart and quick enough to stay away from the gulpers most of the time but sure enough their numbers are dwindling and its only a matter of time before they all are unlucky.

A 9-10inch gulper I bought from another MFK member ate a 15in tarpon and managed to catch it in something like a 400g tank.

wow some great tips/info, thanks everyone!

i know that a species only tank is a wise decision when it come to the gulper, but i still have to ask..

what fish are compatible with gulpers?

Anything way bigger around than they are that won't try to eat them / fight.

Deaths, I want a Gulper badly also. I was going to put him in a 150 g tank with an Oscar but after reading more and more about them I got concerned for the safety of the Oscar lol I'm just going to wait until I have a big tank open and keep the Gulper by itself.
