Gulper Catfish hiding place Debate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Get a large terra cotta pot and just turn it over. You'll still be able to see him and it will give him security. My 10 inch synodontis Angelicus loves his terra cotta pot and will come out anytime the tank lights are off. I can see him pretty well. As was said your gulpers are nocturnal and hate direct light. It would be the equivalant of you trying to sleep with a strong light on all the time.

nice, your response is my favorite so far! keep it coming people

thanks

p.s. sorry, wasn't able to take pics tonight.

If you decide to keep the driftwood out and it doesn't have a place to hide, don't turn on the lights. Like already stated, they are nocturnal and it will stress him/her out being in bright light with no hiding spots. My gulper hides all day long and then comes out at night.

if you have lights live the wood
if you dont have lights and in a dark room take the wood out

I have six large fake plants in my Gulper tank. The five Gulpers are very active (Day & Night). And by having a lot of cover they will be more active because they feel safe :D

From my own experience I would remove the wood and use something like plants for cover that way if they rub against it they won't get hurt, their skin is very very thin ;)

alright a little update for you all!

the wood has been out for almost a week now. i have yet to turn on my tank's light. today was feeding day! (Wednesdays and Saturdays). well, im very happy to say that both gulpers ate half a tilapia fillet! they started fighting over it, the big one for the first time ever! dominated the the little one!

the big one is the one i have problems with; the one that had the damaged fin and was always wedged under the wood. he ate the most ... however, both got their fair share! (nice big bellies!)

one thing that was odd: after the large gulper ate all the food he immediately wedged himself into a bushy plant...is this bad?! or is this normal behavior. Remember! the light is off and has been since i removed the wood. .im just trying to figure out why he ate all his food then went into hiding? he was out and about previous to the feeding.

i think i will buy a couple more plants and a large terra cotta pot, to use as a cave..

should it be large and wide? or should i get a smaller one so the gulper can wedged himself in there? i notice he loves to wedge himself into things; anyone else notice this with their gulpers?

i look forward to hearing more from everyone. :)

thanks again!

Yea I setup my tank so the Gulpers can't wedge them selves between anything. Cause when I first setup the gulper tank one of them got stuck between the filter and UV, so now they have no where to get stuck and so far so good :)

i guess wedging is normal for these guys. however, its seems to me that it isn't very good for them.... they can get stuck and/or hurt themselves..

anyways, keep the ideas and comments going everyone!
