Guppy Wall idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes, a long flexible airstone that can be attached with suction cups, creates lots of bubbles, and if you get one of the betta laser setups, you can make em glow, and it doesnt end up costing much either

thats what id do for more DO

if you dont like the way it looks, place it halfway up the back, so you can have the nice bubbles, and the other half you can clearly see fish

your project looks completely do-able, just figure something out for the filter

on a side note, make sure to not get all the fish that are topswimmer's

sweet plans. You said 6 inches. you could go a bit less to save weight. 4 inches may be enough fo gupps. (just a thought)

I think this DIY is an awesome project. I am going to think hard of a cool filter idea. Perhaps a small "Psuedo wet/dry" mounted under the tank in clear acrylic also. overflow at one end & return at the other using colored pipes. hmmmm

Stinker, have you been reading what's left of my mind? I've been doing some more reading today and the idea of a baby wet/dry could be just what the doctor ordered for this tank, since I could make it whatever dimensions I need. I'm thinking a small one mounted above the tank, suction from the bottom and gravity it back in. I know, this is bass-ackwards for a traditional wet/dry, will it work, or should I go traditional?

Also, you're from Rochester? I'm only an hour away, between the Finger Lakes. Small world!

Dang we're like buds, I would do the filter under the tank myself. Grav overflow & likely just a powerhead rigged for the return. I can see it in my head & I will likely build one in a few months. I will get to work on the plans.. I would make the back all one piece & the sides as well, that way the filter system is connected to the tank (lags in the lower area as well).

A sponge in the overflow, then a pot-scrubber bin (just a few in there). then a couple of pass through floss filters & into the powerhead area, then back up to the tank.

I'll leave room for a heater in the filter box, so its not in the tank (just incase I want one).

I will likely use color acrylic for the back. put a small drain in the bottom of the tank with a shut-off for water changes, leave the bottom bare (perhaps color here too).

and use color for the over-flow, I have an idea for a drip plate above the bio chamber, but I need to think about it more...

I think I am as excited as you are on this.

I am thinking 36x18x4 tank 4x18x4 filter pan with a 4 inch drop for the bio chamber (about 12 gal with filter). I will likely have neon’s in mine.

Note I say mine. My daughter will have to keep the one she has :headbang2

Well folks, looks like a change of plans is in the works. I'll probably still build the guppy-wall, but it will wind up in my room, if the wife agrees with it anyway. Otherwise, it will be in the living or dining room, but that probably won't happen for a while.

The reason, my daughter and I have a new idea. She wants me to build her a new bedframe that's kind of like the top of a bunkbed with a desk for her computer underneath. Now it looks like I'll be building an acrylic tank into the headboard of a new bedframe. I'm hoping to keep it between 15 and 20 gallons, but it's going to be almost 4ft long.:WHOA: I'm also hoping to build the hood with fluorescents for daytime use and blue LEDs for night. Maybe I'll use a photocell to switch between the two automatically.:woot:

OK, time to get off the computer and start drawing this one up!

42 x 18 x 6 = 19 2/3 g (your original idea still works)

or
48 x 15 x 6 = 18.7g
44 x 14 x 6 = 16g
44 x 18 x 6 = 20.5g

So many choices, so little space.

you can still do a w/d sump since you will have access under the tank in the study. Or a canister could be nice.

Don't even tell me I might build mine first!

Above the tank filter will stop the problem of the pump stopping and siphoning the whole tank somewhere...

Like the idea of the bunkbed thing, my grandson is wanting a tank and has bunks already. hhmmm. His bunks wiggle some tho. Have to think about that. I know, built-in wave machine.

Oh, and be careful of your kid, if she ever figures out that a bigger room would be better your done for! :grinyes:

over flow at the top & an anti siphon hole in the return (at top).. turn off the pump & the system will rest, not empty. The water in the tank will drop 1/4 to 1/2 inch & the Filter will rise the same.

if you do a wall mount rather than in the headboard then the bed won't move the tank.

I had made a tank headboard 20 years ago. just never attached it to the bed, it was free-standing.

I'll have to decide which way to go to balance out filtration, ease of maintainence, and cost. I may go with a HOB at first because it's simpler to do, and this projects' ambitious enough already. There's always the option of upgrading at a later time. The only sticking point there would be including an overflow in the original design.
