Gutsy Mix, Can it be Done? 2.0

Up until recently, I had a grossly overstocked 55. It consisted of a banded leporinus, convict, Jack Dempsey, raphael cat, and dither fish. In the past was also a blood parrot and severum which I had to remove for aggression issues. I would never recommend this setup to anyone in a million years. The problem with large fish in a small tank is that anyone can tell they don’t belong there. It becomes more sad and messy than impressive.
I have since moved them to a 125 and the difference is night and day. They are all far more active and far less aggressive (once initial territorial disputes were settled) than before.
If I could have done my 55 differently, I would have done a pair of convicts (or similar sized cichlids) and dither fish as well as a catfish of sorts (likely a raphael or bristlenose). A big male convict is a very impressive fish and even gives some of the big bruisers a run for their money. The white ones look a lot like mini amphilophus cichlids (red devil, Midas, etc.).
If you want something more monstrous, look into exodon tetras. They are a small fish (3 inches), but live up to the piranha name more than any pygocentrus. A large shoal is perfect for a 55.
I would also suggest a red wolf fish. They are the smallest wolf fish, but still get a good size (10 inches). They are incredibly active and a great show fish, as well as highly aggressive. One of the most rewarding fish I have ever kept. There isn’t much by way of tankmates that isn’t also a snack, but in a 55 it could possibly be kept with an armored catfish. Mine is in a 36 bow front - as he grows he may need more space but at 6-7 inches now he isn’t showing signs of needing an upgrade.
A senegal bichir is also a good fish for that size tank - it isn’t large enough to prey on other larger fish but is an impressive fish on its own. Delhezi get larger but are said to be good in a 55 (I personally wouldn’t do less than 75 for the extra width). A sen would do well with the African butterflyfish I mentioned in your first thread (which is a relative to silver arowana).
Personal preference, but any of these fish to me are far more appealing than a silver arowana (maybe because aros are overdone).

Ok...I think I may have come up with a better idea, instead of listing out what I want and getting approval based on my list, how about people who have/had 55-gallon tanks and have/had kept ANY SA cichlid or fish in them list what the tank mates were.

I won't copy the exact setups, but I can pull from various setups to find what I like and at the same time, provide a good home where my fish can stay permanently.
In a 55, most aggressive cichlids will probably not tolerate tankmates from my experience. Maybe a catfish like the Rafael would be ok. If you want tankmates with cichlids, I’d do a type of acara, or some smaller geos. Honduran red points would work too. My favorite peaceful cichlid are rainbow cichlids. If you want an aggressive glass banger as a solo pet, any hemichromis would work, or as stated above I think a Cuban would be cool.

Here’s some rainbow cichlids I had in a community set up ( disregard the geo, a friend dropped that off unannounced)

Thank you for the extended options for SA cichlids! :D By the way, to clarify, I'm scrapping both of my original two ideas that started these threads. So NO silver arowana, and NO fish that are too large for the tank.

Also, another thing to clarify is that I have NOT gotten any of these fish mentioned in my two ideas EXCEPT for my current Striped Raphael Catfish (which is and has been the hinge of all my plans, if you haven't noticed I always have him in my plans) and my black ghost knife (the knife I will probably get rid of soon though I like it).

I just wanted to clarify those facts just in case some people thought I had already done what I originally said I was going to do because some of the above posts have seemed to suggest they thought I had followed through with my plans. All of my plans have been theoretical, none are reality.

Agreed - deeply considering tossing one in with my wolf for some extra detritus cleanup. I’m not even sure it’s because they’re armored - it’s just because they always hide lol

So true though, my Raphael has gone through all of my crazy plans (I've gone through MANY fish before taking a 3-month break from buying and selling fish) and has even survived being crushed on the head by yours truly. Don't ask for me to tell that story...it was minorly traumatic for me lol...but I will tell you the ending, I slipped him back into my tank and he has been perfectly healthy ever since. I still have him to this day and he is my precious lol. Raphs are total tanks.

+1
If it were my tank, I’d do a couple sens and a delhezi. With some top dwellers like a butterfly or my choice would be a couple hujeta. You can get them on frozen pretty easily and I got mine onto pellets
