There's plenty of oddball fish that can fit in your tank and still give you that wow factor, just not all at the same time. The smaller bichirs, butterfly fish, elephant nose, puffers, smaller eels, loaches are still pretty odd even though popular, archerfish, leaf fish, halfbeaks, there's inverts like crayfish, crabs, shrimp etc.

I can't do inverts cause the fish I'm keeping will eat them, even crayfish. But I can do most of those oddballs you mentioned. I like elephant nose and eels.

There’s also smaller wolf fish like reds and purples that would work; you could also do about 25 Exodons

I have seriously considered the red wolf fish. I really like them, but I have to order one online, and I've never done that before. Bucktooth Tetras won't work for me because I have a Raphael catfish that is staying, and I don't want anything to kill my precious Raph.

As for natives, yes, I have considered them as well. Most natives we have are much too large to be kept in a 55-gallon tank, sadly :(. But I can check again and see if there are some I missed...

You really should look into ordering online, I get 95% of my fish online and as long as you use a good source, it’s totally fine and really opens up your options

What websites are trustworthy sources for fish? I've gone through many, Predatory Fins, AquaImports, etc.

Those are good, Jonas is good for natives, exoticfishshop is great for oddballs. Have you thought about a rift tank maybe a peacock, mbuna or smaller tangs or even a Victorian breeding group?

Plenty of good ones, really depends on what you are looking for.
Aqua imports
Exotic fish shop
Worldwide fish and pets (I got my Amazon pufferfish and red wolf from there and would 100% order again)
The wet spot
Imperial tropical (mostly cichlids I believe)

Just to name a few
