ive copmpared multiple pics and i have to disagree

First pic looks like a Guttulatum. Second pic is a different Vieja....

Ohhhh,nice vieja:D (I am a vieja enthusiast) and the 2nd looks like a V.Zonatum.

Unsure about the 1st one as it has a vertical lines(unlike zonatum which have one horizontal black line). Could be a guttulum,I would check for you.

This is a female zonatum picture for comparison .Sorry for the big pic though:(.

I'd say first one is guttulatus and second is zonatus. zonatus will almost always show one solid horizotal lateral black bar. they seldom, if ever will show vertical bars.

That second photo is (was) my female zonatus. If you jack a photo off the web at least give some credit.

And they do get the vertical bars, especially when breeding, stressed, or angry.

But look at the difference....your fish, in breeding colors, has a very prominent horizontal line with very faint vertical bars. The fish in the first post has next to 0 evidence of a horizontal line but much more prominent vertical bars. It also does not appear to be in breeding dress and doesn't appear to be angry...and I've never seen a pic of zonatus just stressed out enough to show vertical bars.

I kept a zonatus <male, I believe> for a couple of years and through all that time, through displays of aggression <it was the dominant fish in the tank> and various breeding attempts it never once showed vertical bars.

It was in a CA book I read that the primary difference between guttulatus and zonatus was that zonatus always have a prominent horizontal black stripe and rarely, if ever display vertical bars while the opposite is true of guttulatus...they more often display vertical bars and rarely a solid horizontal stripe.

:)

I didn't want to do it but you've forced my hand. Hence, my worst photos ever.

Here she is after I added a trio of juvenile P. synspilum to her tank, who she hated. If you can even tell that that is a fish in my photos. I'm not disputing what you're saying, I'm simply saying it's not 100% infallible.
