Gutted, just lost my large pigeon blood

How are you managing to keep a 0 nitrate reading? Spot on for pH doesn't really mean anything. What was the pH? How many gallons is the tank? Do you feed garlic very often? What color was the fish feces? What is your WC schedule? What is the tank setup? Any tankmates? What were you doing immediately before feeding them last? Do you have any stray voltage in the tank? Have you cleaned your filter recently? How well is your filter running? What kind of filter is it?

These questions will help towards figuring out a problem. Generally if the leader of the pack dies, it is a bad sign for the rest of your discus.

'How are you managing to keep a 0 nitrate reading?'
Water changes

'Spot on for pH doesn't really mean anything'
Fair point, 6.0 to 6.1, never moves much because we only use ro, just gone to test again and can't find the kit, was 6.1 this morning, 7 hours ago

'What was the pH?'
Last test before the death was 6.0 done about a week or go

'How many gallons is the tank?'
63-64 usgal, 53 ukgal, 240 litres

'Do you feed garlic very often?
hard to answer, our discus importer/everything else, dropped off the map around 6 months ago, we used to buy food mixed by them, which had garlic in it but as it was a 'home made' brand it was very messy, fish loved it btw. Never had any hith head problems since

'What color was the fish feces?'
Honestly don't know, apart from the odd bit of food waste it the tank, there is nothing much to clean up

'What is your WC schedule?'
5 ukgal, 6 usgal, 22.5 litres, daily

'What is the tank setup?'
Bare bottom, 2 pieces of bog wood with plants attached(java), one filter internal juwel jumbo, 1000 lph powerhead, 2 heaters, one ext filter teratec 1200(carbon removed) 1200 lph

'Any tankmates?'
2 blue turks, 2 red turks, one blue diamond, one baby cobalt, one baby pigeon blood and a plec that we never see as it lives under the bogwood

'What were you doing immediately before feeding them last?'
Not wanting to sound 'off' or anything here, but watching tv

'Do you have any stray voltage in the tank?'
No

'Have you cleaned your filter recently?'
Yes last week and they were reasonably clean

'How well is your filter running?'
See above

'What kind of filter is it? '
see above

The Blue diamond was it's best mate, we got them 12 months ago and came from separate tanks but bonded straight away and took over, quickly grew and overtook the rest. Now the rest of the pack follow it around but it does look a bit lonely, I think it's just missing it's best bud.
The rest are all still feeding fine and still give you that 'feed me' dance they do when you come into the room.
One of the red turks has darkened slightly in colour of the past weeks but is still feeding fine, I'm reluctant to use any meds for the next week or to make sure everything is ok.

2sybs, I can't see a contamination issue because when we feed the blocks they all come and attack the food out of our hands, if there was a problem this way then we should have lost them all, good idea though..

If not the food or water, could there have been something on your hands?
Lotion or even a bit of soap residue?
Sorry about your loss.

Any ideas, or should we chalk it to 'one of those things'?

The rest of the fish are still fine, if there is no problems in week or so I'll have a hunt around for another good one.

Sorry for your loss. That was a nice fish!

I'm thinking about the feeding time and then he went down right after that - do you think it's possible he swallowed too much food and it caused some internal problems? I've kept discus and never had this happen to me, but I have heard of it happening. It's the only reason I can think of.

I'm not familiar with the Improveit discus food. Is this a freeze dried food?

You are doing well with your fish, I would say, Keep going with the discus!

Thanks, windsurfer

Yes it's frozen small pellets, we feed them it at room temp, the cichlid blocks we feed them are frozen and break up in a matter of minutes.

All the other fish are still fine, apart from the turk who is still darker in colour. We've started treatment with Sterazin, general treatment for parasites, as apart from the darker colour, it's feeding fine and generally 'being itself'

Started treatment ' insert crossed finger smiley here'

Sorry to hear that. :( I lost 3 of mine last week.

Treatment seems to be going well, there are some strange stringy white bits that have appeared in the tank, looks like it could have been some sort of parasite after all. I'll keep the treatment going until full coarse as the fish are still fine with it. Hopefully this will finish off anything nasty still lurking around .
