Gymnogeophagus balzanii in temperature below 40 f

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My gymnos, chanchitos acaras and pikes from Uruguay have been down to 48 degrees f this year. Most mornings they are around 52 degrees this time of year. In January February the water will have a high of about 54 and drop down to mid 40s for periods of up to 30 plus hours at times.

What a great thread! Find it really interesting to keep "exotic" species outside, especially year-round. Was gonna do it with Corydoras Paleatus and white cloud mountain minnows but i can't anymore lol

Exotic doesn’t necessarily mean tropical…these Uruguay fish we are discussing come from
Around 32 degrees from the equator. Think Jacksonville florida to the coast of South Carolina.

How cold can they handle?

These gymnogeophagus fish can handle 40-45F(4-8 celsius) for about 4 weeks.Recently I added some young gymno terrapurpura.
During winter i keep them in garage. Gymno Mekinos can handle 2 celsius(35F) water temperature but i am not sure for how many days/weeks.
