Water temp; depends of where they come from....Paraguay....Argentina or Uruguay?
In the north part of Uruguay, there I collect the balzanii, the water temp right now (winter) is between +15c and +18c.

I have absolutely no idea unfortunately, and probably never will unless there is a physical difference colour or shape between fish from the different localities. At this stage I'll just be keeping the tank at 26 constant.

The cooling period theory is a definite fact - but it only shortens their lifespan, it will not actually kill them. I'd say it knocks 2 or 3 years off of em'...I'm thinking about doing a pond with gymno's since I live in Southern California nd our weather is pretty much built for their needs...awesome fish - I love the way mature alpha males look :)

Folks, not to derail, but I have 6 Juvi Gym Paso Pasche, and are you saying they do not need a cooling period? or do, as Right now I have them chilling in a 10 with no heater, water is about 70.....

I'd love to grab some Balzani, they are my next Gymnos.....

Japes our LFS's here in NZ got a few balzani in about 6 months ago, haven't seen them for ages before that. They were around $25, but I picked up five (plus a surinamensis) when Animates [our chain-store] had a buy-two-get-one-free deal. They're doing well at 26C (keeping them with clown loaches, random and not ideal but too many fish and not enough tanks!!). I haven't decided if I'll keep them in the 200L 3' with some tetras and corys so I can give them a cooling period, or chuck them in the 160g with everything else.
