nice! i have seven of them but only at two or three inches. HOw long have you had them and have you ever had any trouble with them? Do you give them a wintering period? Have they ever bred??????

I have them in their wintering period right now. The tank is about 69 and should probably be slightly lower from what i've read on the forums but this tank is in my living room and this is probably as low as it will go unless i freeze my ass off this winter. They have breed before but the wigglers disappeared. I've only had them about 6 months and some of mine came from a local fish store while the rest came from Spencer Jack while I was in Cincinnati. They seem to be slow growers.

Good lookin Labiatus.

Honda mentioned his Oblongum are pretty agressive. How are yours with the Gymnos?

....Bill

My Oblongums are perfect tankmates for the Labiatus. They don't seem to mess with each other at all. I couldn't ask for better tankmates.

they grow not too slow not too fast. I have had mine for about 4 months and some have almost doubled in size. I'm sure this is the point in their lives they will grow fastest. Mine also are at 69 and are doing well. Is it your male that came from spencer jack? Mine are fry from a pair of spencer jack wild caught. I have 3 males and four females it looks like so we'll see how that goes as they mature. They are not too scrappy so far.

I bought some smaller Labiatus from my LFS and they are growing kind of fast but the adult males and female i bought from Spencer Jack are growing at a much slower rate. Sounds like you have a nice group but my 2 males didn't get along in the same tank and i had to move 1 into another tank with my Balzani.

I have a feeling in another year or two I will have to separate some of them but for now they are ok with some other gymno varieties including an arroyo yerbolita that is by far the feistiest of the bunch but no one is getting too beat up. The guy I got them from just recommended keeping their diet down to mostly veggies to avoid the bloat most people experience when keeping these fish for the long term. I tend to listen to people who breed fish for a living. I tend to give them more meats than I probably should in hopes of developing the hump faster. I think if their color is good then they are getting a healthy balance of diet.

I do tend to give mine foods higher in protein. I'll take your cue and up the veggie content. Thanks.

The hump will show for breeding, after the cool down, when the temps start to come up, so does the nuchal hump. Driftwood, did you get them at ACA in 2009?

I bought 3 of them in Cincinnati yes. I was lucky to get back to Denver and find a small group in a LFS and i snatched those up too.
