could Gymnogeophagus be in a 29long with some community fish?

Yes

Gymnos are not tropical species and can and should be kept without a heater. PLease keep that in mind when selecting community fish.

some of the smaller ones could be...such as Gymnogeophagus meridionalis which don't grow beyond 3-4", Gymnogeophagus' are usually much smaller than the geophagus'. Often they only hit 5" at max...some grow bigger, but usually 6" is it. I would be comfortable putting a harem of a male and two females with no other inhabitants in a 29 no problem.

What species of gymno are you looking to get? Some might be a bit cramped but could fit while others might need a tank 2 to 3 times as big
