Gymnos are not tropical species and can and should be kept without a heater. PLease keep that in mind when selecting community fish.

They aren't tropical but are temperate. Most will benefit from a cooler period for a month or two but they also need warmer water for the rest of the year, and they certainly won't tolerate COLD water for long.
Suggesting they should be kept without a heater on an international forum with people from all sorts of different climates is foolish....

My friend has them with some community fish and has not had any problems. Now he did introduce them into the tank at 1 inch.
