My gymnogeophagus balzanii has ich today, whats the best temperature to use for this kind of situation? Can i go up to 85? What medication should i use? any help is appreciated.

I have had great luck with Aquasol and temps of 84 or so for a couple weeks. However I haven't kept Gymnos and think they like it cooler than my SA cichlids... Sorry I couldn't be more help.

add salts bump the temp and water changes about 25% daily

yeah i would wait to hear from some experienced gymo people before bumping the temp up that high, i dont think that it would be too good for them, for now i would just go ahead and add the salt and then wait for someone with gymno experience to chime in on the temp situation GOOD LUCK, sorry i couldnt be more help

just a question on this to clear it up..when told to add salt..would That be refering to table salt or aquarium salt?

This issue is one that I'm very familiar with. I lost an entire tank of gymno's a while back and it upset me so much that I refuse to house them again. My whole problem started with ICK. If I were you I would just raise the temp for a few days and treat with quick cure and don't add the salt. Once the Ick is gone start to gradually lower the temp until you have it back to where you want it. I would not use the salt but that is just my opinion and do a 50% water change upon completing the medication. Also you should check your water chemistry and if your water is too hard you will need to buffer it and I'm betting to say this is what brought about the ICK.

its tough with gymnos because of this reason, they have season variation with water temperature and need that to live a longer healthy life. you should really be keeping them in a heaterless tank. i would just keep up with waterchanges but it may be hard to kill the ich with just WCes. meds may be needed too

What's the temperature now? 85F in itself may not be a big problem, as it gets up to the 90s in their natural habitat in the summer. The key is not to raise temperature suddenly. I did and suffered a heartbreaking loss.

I would add salt, do frequent water changes, and raise the temperature very slowly.
