So I have had this group for a little while now. The first one I got from Wes probably about two years ago. Roughly 6-8 months later I got three more from him. When I had only one I never saw it, but now with four they are fairly active. They have been in FW the whole time I have had them. I do add seachem GH booster to the tank because Wes told me to keep a higher GH. They are pretty easy to feed. I do mostly cut up seafood with shrimp being their favorite. They will also take floating and sinking pellets. I have gone through a fair amount of tankmates with them (nothing being killed/dieing just rearranged). Anything put with them had been well established in one of my tanks first. Initially my one was in a 26 bow with a pom pom knife and a an L114. Then it was just the 4 eels and two L14 grow outs. At one point I added 4 filamentous barbs, which they hated. I recently moved them out of the 26 where they were housed with 2 ebjd and a dat. Now they are in a 50 with 2 L14 grow outs, 4 barracuda, 2 clouded archers, and 2 small scale archers

These guys don't really stay still well. I think they range from probably 1 foot to pushing 2 feet. The big one if fairly thick. I will try get some better pictures later on too. Once again not easy.

Awesome Job Mike!

Incredible animals, you are forging new territory successfully keeping them long term in fresh water as well as comming them with mixed species!

This is the eel people should see in every LFS as it will actually live.

Couple questions, how do you have the tank covered? any fear of jumpers? Do they fight amongst them selves? How about a feeding vid?

There are literally no open spaces on my lid. I am pretty sure they would leave the tank pretty quickly. I have found keeping a couple together seems to keep them more active, but they don't really interact with each other. They are kind of like cats. When they run into each other they open their mouth to threaten the other one then go on their way. On occasion I will find two together but not to common. They are typically hiding. They seem to perfer tight spaces such as narrow pvc pipe and tight crevices.

When they are upset they seem to stop eating for a couple days. Since I just moved them I will probably hold on feeding until this weekend. Will try to get a video. WHen they get too large of piece of shrimp they literally tie themselves into a knot and rip chunks of flesh off the shrimp. I have never offered the group any live food. They took to the frozen seafood and pellets right away.

What bothered them about the barbs?

Think the barbs were just too active for them. The constant movement just seemed to irritate them. They would hide more and make threatening jesters at them.

They don't seem to mind the barracudas or the archers at all. I do want to get the archers/cudas out of the tank soon and put in a school of a larger calm tetra.

NICE, The big one is sweet!
How much GH boost do you add?
How often do you feed?
During water changes, do you have water already prepared with GH boost or do you add after you do the water change?

Thank you. So I can't remember how I came to this amount nor do I measure GH, but I add about 1/4 teaspoon directly to the tank every water change. I typically remove 15-20 gallons twice a week and i pour the powder in while the tank is filling up. I have been doing this for the last two years with no ill effects to any of the fish.
I typically feed this guys once a day about 5-6 days a week. I initially was feeding less, but every night they come out hunting for food like clockwork.

I really need to put a feeding video together. I want to catch them making knots of themselves to rip up the food but have only seen it two to three times.

In the wild they are supposed to eat a lot inverts, so I am thinking about doing a 10 g with self cloning crays or ghost shrimp for them.

Nice. This morning my guy took down some carni sticks, was pretty stoked lol
My guy patrols the glass about 70% of the day, pretty active little bugger :)

Nice they are fun to watch bob for pellets. What do you have yours housed with?
I also have found they really like tight hiding spots.

Also West1 did you get two or one more?
