H. armatus x3

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The other two are in the 7" range now, he is just an anomaly.

I feed him every day, sometimes twice a day. The amount at each feeding is pretty impressive, Id say he eats around 2-4oz/ per meal. Im guessing he weighs around a pond now.

Crazy thing is, I cant get any good pics of him, (just have my phone) and he looks really small in all of the pics.

The fish is solo in a 125 with two Marineland 400b a wet/dry pushing around 6-700GPH and a really strong powerhead. He spends most of the day in the slack water of the tank and really never swims into the powerhead, so Im thinking about removing it.

I always found this interesting cuz I have to 12"ers in a 150 and I used to have a large koralia that pushed 2800gph and they absolutely loved swimming against it. I had to take it out though cuz it kept gettin clogged with sand

Very nice JD. Shame the others havent kept up in growth. None of mine swim in the powerhead, actually they go to the opposite end. Only real reason I keep it is to keep water movent at the surface of water for O2.

Another update. Big guy is looking fantastic. Aggressively feeding on a couple of whole frozen finger mullet in the four to five inch range. I sometimes will feed every day for awhile then go a few days with out feed. He eats out of my hand now. Only issue is he is quickly out growing the 125. The other two are still doing really well in the 29 but still too small to add to the bigger tank. I just won a local fishing tournament so Im on the look out for a larger tank.

I had an epiphany, I have a bare bottom tank so I taped one of those tape measures tailors use to the bottom of the tank under where he rests and he is spot on 14".

He is really starting to darken up and get that "adult" look to him. Teeth are now big and white vs the translucent white of juvies.

My only issue is that some days he will swim non stop rubbing his nose on the glass and hell rub a small sore, but then after a day or two he stops and it quickly heals only to repeat the process. Ive been on the look out for some dithers but unfortunately I cant find anything big enough for him.

Hey J I've been trying to message you but your box is full.

Growth has really slowed. He is still in the 14" range. He eats a highly varied diet of shrimp, fish fillet from many different species (Amberjack, cobia, red snapper, grouper, flounder, redfish and more). Also eats whole mullet and bull minnows.

He also recently jumped out of his tank, I scooped him up and was surprised at how heavy he was! He broke his dorsal and had some scale loss but was eating later that night and has pretty much already healed 100%.

Interesting note, as you can see he is replacing a fang. The tank is completely bare and yet the tooth is no where to be found. You think he swallowed it?!2014-06-02 11.19.54.jpg

Learned something new yesterday. My armatus eats whole Tilipia filets now, when he ate a piece yesterday and a 1" fang was lodged in the food. He swallowed it like nothing! So I bet they loose a lot when eating and they swallow them.
