I have a year and a half old female H. carpintis "Escondido" that is 7". I've seen several males in the 12" range.

Here's my male Cyano. Roughly 10.5 inches and 2.5 years old. I say he'll hit 12 inches no problem.

Females will more than likely get around 8"
Males can get as big as 11-12" but they aren't seen at that size to often.
more around 9-10"

Males can reach 12", and I just sold a beautiful female that was every bit of 10" and very thick. I would have sworn she was a male until she laid eggs (with a Synspilum male). I was convinced she was a male primarily because I had heard experienced guys say they hadn't seen females over 8", but she was pure carpinte from a valid source and I measrued her coming out of the tank on the way to sell. I would have kept her, but she was unbearable against the other fish once she paired up with that Synspilum. I will probably start over with a small male Escondido if I can find one.

I didnt say that 12inch carpintes dont exist i was just saying that you are more likely to come across ones in the 8inch range as adults, and i think this thread was about carpintes not cyans. just to clear things up.

My lfs has one that is a female and roughly about 8 inches right now.

Yes we're talking about carpinte, cyanos can reach 12" no questions about it...
But the carpintis, as some literature suggests, reaches only 8". Is escondido a special strain or hybrid? I am referring to the pure carpintis, not special strains nor hybrids.

Even if they only grow 8 to 10 inches, a 35 gallon would be very small for a couple.I suggest a 55 or bigger.

Well I just thought I could do that since convicts which grows to 6" can be bred in 20G aquariums. Your suggestion is very much appreciated..
