H. Multispinosa

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've always read they get to 6" but my females all started spawning at 2". I doubt they'll get much larger. I guess they could continue growing, though. It took my severums 2 years to reach their adult sizes, so maybe the same goes for these.

Either way, they're fun little fish... Very peaceful and very active. But I had 2 pairs and soon every tank was overrun!

What else did you keep them with? I remember that you had them with Dwarf Pikes before if I'm not mistaken. I think some smaller Rams may be okay to mix with them.

I kept them with my Krobia pair for a while, then some wild Geos and my notatus severum growouts. I tried putting the bigger males in my 210g but the psittacus quickly ate the entire tail off of one, so they got moved back to smaller tanks.

I wouldn't keep them with blue/gold/EB rams (M. ramirezi), just because they're constantly active and they are extremely pushy at feeding time. I think they'd be too busy and make the rams nervous. But they're definitely good with other peaceful medium-to-large cichlids like sevs, geos, acaras, etc. You could probably also do Bolivian rams (M. altispinosa). I just got a couple small ones from Gary @ Daytona Aquarium and they're cute little guys. They need to put on size though. He had a whole tankful.

Considering they're Central American, you could probably mix them with various CA cichlids. I just don't know enough about CAs to make any suggestions.

Thanks Ryan. I appreciate the advice. If I had sand for a substrate I would get Geos. I've seen some really nice ones and thought a few of them would make nice tankmates. You named a few others that I considered too. I will probably make Saturday a fish shopping day.

I have HUNDREDS of fry...not sure what the hell I am going to do with them all!!!!
