I thought it was clogged because it made a humming sound but it wasnt pulling in any water.I broke it down and gave it a good cleaning but it still does the same thing.Any ideas before I chuck it,I have had it quite a few years now?
I'd guess you put it back together wrong. every time mine wouldn't spin, that was the problem. try it without the foam washers to give yourself some extra space. the fact that it's humming means the magnetism is trying to spin the impeller, but can't.
oops, forgot you can just put the impeller in there without all the other stuff to check if it spins.
Yeah but it was already humming and not pulling water when I came down in the morning to check on the fish, then I took it apart and cleaned everything out and no change.
Look closely at the motor housing and impeller sometimes sand can get in it and ruin them or wear it down. While the impeller is seated in the housing see if u can spin it urself.
there really isn't a motor to go bad. the impeller is spun with magnetic fields from coils in the housing. the only moving part is the impeller. in 20 years I've only found 3 conditions to cause problems.
no water flow is a blockage.
no flow with a hum is a stuck impeller-usually my fault.
lots of clacking and rattling type noises is a beat up impeller or housing.
this has held true for HOB, canisters, and powerheads from several different makers.
I've got 4 or 5 impeller housings sitting around because they're still fine but the plastic of the filter has degraded too much to use.
I picked up a Magnum 350 used off of craigslist...came with a tank I bought. Brought it home cleaned it up and set the tank up in the garage for a leak test. Filter worked perfectly. After I brought the tank inside and the motor will not turn on at all. It was old when I got it...guess I'll be buyin a new motor.
