im using a hang on tank magnum canister filter for a filter on my 50 gallon tank. it is rated for aquariums up to 55 gallons and it pumps 250 gallons per hour. im trying to get a single tiger oscar in it and i heard they are very messy fish. is there any way to improve on the filtration without buying another filter? i would probably do 25 percent water changes every week, and btw how do u guys clean ur gravel without picking up gravel too? thanks in advance :clap

I use the magnum on my 40 with an emperor 400 and I get a littlew nitrate. Thats it. I change 5 gallons a week. There isnt even anything to vacuum off the gravel. I have a 6 inch aro in there, 2 5 inch silver tip sharks, 3 3 inch clownn loaches and a couple of guppies. I feed them alot of shrimp, krill and earth worms. I lave the magnum, without it, I used to have alot of debris, all is good now.

Oscars are sloppy pigs. they make a total mess. I love mine.

can you say pleco?

I clean the gravel with a vacuum. the gravel gets pulled in, but just control the flow with a pinch of the hose.

A python is a nice system, you can adjust the pressure, but I would need to much hose.

I wouldnt be shy of buying another filter to increase filtration, but there are likely people with ideas to jump the filtration of you magnum..

I think guppy might recommend powerheads near the bottom to stir things up a bit. so the filter can do its job.

do i really need something as strong as an emperor 400 to go alongside the hot in the 50 because im only keeping a single tiger oscar in it. could u reccommend something smaller and cheaper :grinyes:

ooo so a pump towards the bottom of the tank will kick up the crap in the gravel? i mite go with that. but if i went with only the hot would an adult oscar just create tooooo much waste?

You can only see part of the emperor in this pic the magnum is on the right side, i will take some tomorrow of the full setup and size of the fish so you can get an idea of the load I have in there
