Leave the rods and reels, live bait and boats behind. Just have to sit down and drink coffee and eat donuts.

My bad, December 7th. I edited that in, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

If you've never toured the hatchery, this will be a good time to see how things are done at the state level. It's quite a facility.

Thanks,I'll check my work schedule.

You got it. Check out the size of the place on google maps. I don't think it's gonna be a quick tour, lol. Although I would imagine them being done 12:30pm or so, for lunch. It appears they have well over 10 large ponds going.

Sounds cool.I hope I can make it.

What species do they work with ?

I'm sure some people will want to know - will the opportunity arise to buy some fish ?

It's the state of NJ's hatchery for local lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. The only fish they breed and raise are native warm-water species. To my knowledge, they do not sell fish. Here's a complete list of the species-

FAMILY NAME SCIENTIFIC NAME COMMON NAME
Esocids Esox lucius Northern Pike
Esox lucius x E. masquinongy Tiger Muskellunge/Tiger Muskie
Esox masquinongy Muskellunge
Percidae Stizostedion vitreum Walleye/Walleye Pike
Centrarchidae Micropterus salmoides Largemouth Bass
Micropterus dolomieu Smallmouth Bass
Lepomis macrochirus Bluegill
Lepomis gibbosus Pumpkinseed Sunfish
Pomoxis nigromaculatus Black Crappie
Moronidae Morone saxatilis x M. chrysops Hybrid Striped Bass
Ictaluridae Ictalurus punctatus Channel Catfish
Ictalurus nebulosus Brown Bullhead
Cyprinidae Pimephales promelas Fathead Minnow
Poeciliidae Gambusia affinis Mosquitofish
Salmonidae Salvelinus namaycush Lake Trout

I'm looking forward to seeing the Muskellunge.

From the state website, http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/hacktown.htm-
The West or main segment (199 acres) consists of a large state of the art fish culture facility, education center, and a 100-acre extensive pond complex consisting of more than 60 earthen ponds. These ponds range in size from .25-5 acres. The East Hatchery (34 acres) is used for extensive production only consisting of 40 earthen ponds, which range in size from .25-1 acre. The main water supply for both hatcheries is 52-degree spring water naturally bubbling out of the ground.

And a video of how the facility breeding program works- http://videos.nj.com/star-ledger/2010/05/spawning_warm_water_fish_speci.html
