Just shorten your intake tube so its much higher.

This is what I did! It works and I put Polly floss in the intake of the HOB. It's sand proof. I won't even tell you about the modification that I did on my overflow. I will wait until it's up and running, but if I say so myself I am a very clever young man.

I've tried a bunch of different things for substrate minus the tile idea... I should have listened to boost a while back before I got sand and just done the tile then and saved myself the hassel but aparently I had to learn from my own mistakes lol

im going to do this for my next project as well.. i think im going to go gloss and just sit them on the bottom so i can clean underneath them if i have too.. i have a tile cutter so i am going to cut a half moon ect for around the over flow and to fit tiles perfectly

yeah i've got a tile cutter too. think I'll give it a try! off to lowe's!

Don't use silicone. It will create point stress on the bottom of glass tanks. And being able to clean under them is a very good idea.

how? not going too, just wondering.

It make sense in my mind.. but I don't know exactly. I guess that it's really hard to make a perfectly flat coat of silicone to stick a tile down, so you'd generally put dots to hold it down. Then if you put weight on top of the tile, then all of that weight is right on top of those points.

Still though, the tile isn't perfectly flat on the bottom either.
