I have a 120g reeftank with a dsb and 12bulb t5 fixture the tank itself is new (to me) I moved my live rock from my 75 I had for 2-3 years and the 120 came with liverock that had been in for over a year aswell. I have some experience with bta's but didn't like how much they moved around, and I really like the carpet anemones. I love the hadoni carpet but I hear horror stories of them eating fish I saw one where a blue jaw trigger was consumed.. ( i have one and love it... alive) are they really that bad about eating fish? Would a hosting pair of clowns make it less likely for fish to get close enough to be eaten? i know my maroon wouldn't let me get ANYWHERE near my gbtas could this deter fish from bumping into it? Would I be better off going for a gigantea? ideas insights thoughts concerns experience all comments welcome.

Current stock list
fireshrimp
citron goby
watchman goby (who watches the corner under all my rocks :irked: )
purple tang
gold striped maroon (could easily part with)
blue chin trigger

Anemones tend to only eat sick/dieing fish... unless the nem is so big that the fish cant swim by without touching it, then its a huge risk... but generaly nems only take fish that aren't healthy enough (or to small) to swim away when stung. That said bottom dwellers like gobys are at risk as they have been know to swim over them but just on top resulting in them getting eatten, but that also said if you had a clown host it (haddons carbets tend to only host sadle backs/clarkies) then fish would likely stay away as the more "agressive" clowns defend the nem, resulting in lower risk.

A fish eating nem will eat anything.

If it is healthy, it doesnt take much for a big nem to bring in a big critter.

They can stick, and stick to a lot of things you wouldnt expect them to. If they call the nem a fish eater, and you take good care of it, it is only a matter of time until one of your smaller fish decides to venture close or host and gets consumed.

+1

In the small confines of an aquarium it just takes one sting for any fish you have to be gone.

I do think that clowns would help keep other fish away, but no guarantees.

It will basically come down to how much risk you are willing to take.

well I know with my bubble tips my maroon would chase off anything even my hand..
so I was hoping they would deter things from going near to it.

as far as risk of fish being eaten which carpet style anemone would be LESS risky.

yeah I've seen the mini's and they don't really host clowns :(
part of me would like to get a bubbletip on one side a carpet on the other a maroon and a skunk maybe? maybe throw in some crucifer's on the rocks.

My tube anemone ate a 5" $400 rinopius scorpionfish & many, many other fish. He now lives in a fishless tank with a purple lobster & a Peacock mantis shrimp.

Hmmm I love the look of carpets and bubble anny suces stories?

Mini carpets are known to eat clowns.

Remember that fish eating nems are fish eating nems. They dont care, they dont have brains. They have a knee jerk reaction, and then they eat that fish.

Very few people in the reefing hobby are getting mini-nems hosted.

Many are getting their clownfish eaten when they try. Do a search on R2R about it.
