I know ur fish doesn't have parasites but it may shock he to eat. Do a 60 percent w/c and Add a double dose of praZi. I had a ray in a com tank that got stressed and would not eat for a while I added a double dose of praZi as a last resort ad it worked.

How can we be sure she doesn't have parasites? Isn't a big dent a tell tale sign of internal parasites?

Just a single one time double dose?

Yes add the praZi double dose over an hour not all at once. I do a 10 percent wc everyday and re add meds taken out. After a week 40percent wc no meds. Well I assumed that u had her with multiple rays an if they are not affected then I wouldn't point the finger at parasites. But the stress may have caused for her immune system to become more susceptible to the parasite but I am not sure I am not a scientist. But I know when I am tired and work crazy I usually get sick after. Just personal theory.

Whenever I feel like a failure with the rays

i dont know one ray keeper that hasnt felt this way one time or another..
i feel for you with the trouble you have with your rays.
Not eating is a killer..just sitting back watching it waste away..
and your rays not breeding..that would drive me ****ing nuts...
keep your head up alan..you are not alone.

It's not that they aren't breeding..... I just had 3 aborted pups less then 2 weeks ago. :( It's not like the males aren't intrested, can ususally see them thumping the females discs and pulling them around. I wonder if I'm not making a big mistake by not seperating the males and females. I'm working on making more room so I have the option of putting the males in timeout.

Friggin stupid this girl can do this kind of time not eating and my most prized Marble passed after only being off food for less then 2 weeks. The other I lost was off food less then a week.

This ray started acting dumb a few weeks before the others, and I already lost the other 2. :(

Possible that all this trouble is on the males? I already pulled the 2 smallest ones. There was 5 total trying to get things going. There's currently 3 in there now.

I know my track record for breeding Marbles isn't good.

Sounds like the females immune systems are getting weak from the stress of breeding which is allowing whatever it is that is floating in your tank to infect them. I noticed the disk edge is eroded in the pic, is that unhealed wounds, bacteria eating away, or deteriorating from lack of food? Is it red on the bottom side? I still think whatever you have going on is bacterial related and not parasites.

i have never bred rays nor have i even came close...but..
from all the horror stories i have heard..i can only tell you what i am going to do...as soon as i know a female is pregnant she will be put by herself..not even with another female.
i have no idea if its parasites or bacterial..all i know is that i would treat both.
do you have a UV on your system?

All female disk edges are eroded. Should have seen her before it healed up, was much worse. Bellies and pelvic areas are mildly pink, seems all of the rays are. Just thought it was normal from the sand.

Maybe it is just stress? They have never ALL quit eating or shown similar symptoms of anything. I've seen a few go off food, a few with funny breathing, some goofy looking disks, but nothing that's solid amongst all of them. The dent girl has been housed alone, but on the same system as my CB pups the pups have been fine the whole time.

And the real funny thing is my anti Marbles are fine.

Just kind of wierd that the last 3 rays I've lost were all proven females.

IF you think it's bacteria I might as well get a kilo of Bifuran coming. Haven't spent enough on meds in the last few months...... LMAO. Would have got one with the kilo of Metro but they were out of stock when I ordered that.

The problem is how do you KNOW they're preggo? You see movement right? What if they are harassed to the point they reabsorb the pups before that movement is seen halfway through the pregnanacy?

I understand the isolation thing, and have no problem doing it. When I reworked my 750 I glued braces to the bottom of the tank and drilled holes in the top of the tank to brace the divider. Works great. My last 2 CB pups were born behind it.

No UV. Hard to justify the $700-$1K it would cost to put one on a 1200 gallon system when people can't even agree on them being necessary. There's plenty of people here breeding and keeping rays just fine without any UVs.

As far as meds, again hard to justify spending several hundred dollars to shotgun medicate a 1200 gallon system. IF I knew they needed it no problem, but I don't. Throwing that much money in the water hoping for better rays sounds like a really expensive wishing well. :(

Not trying to be a prick, just sharing the view from my side of the fence......

Believe me this (Marble breeding project) is quickly turning into one of the most difficult things I've ever set out to attempt. I spent less time winning a DB Drag world championship then I've spent trying to establish a top shelf breeding group. The frustration is so great it's bordering on hatred. I love them so much that not being able to breed them is making me hate them. Which has spurred a change of heart towards a lot of things.
