Hair algae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what size is your tank and how many watts are your lights? sometimes running too many wattage and not having enough plants and overfeeding will trigger algae blooms.

Hmm. didn't know excel killed val.. no wonder i lost mine.. I've always delt with hair algae w/ rosy barbs. a pair will get the job done usually. usually I go w/ long fins as they can be rather aggressive fish, but the LF variety seems to be more docile or simply can't move as quick. but w/ a pike and jag.. short fins might be fine. You may have to replace them every few monthes or so if the pike or jag catch them.. lol. But ime they prefer the hair algae, and won't eat your plants. Barley also works well for many people, personally i've never had luck useing it.

Petsmart sells a barley and pete extract, would that have any control over hair algae? and does it effect inverts? I have a TERRIBLE hair algae problem in my snail farm, and I can't find any way to kill it without also killing the snails.

But it looks terrible, and the wife is after me to clean it up.
