I have some kinda black algae and green algae in my planted tank. Its in my 29 planted tank. I have ottos to get rid of regular algae but they dont eat hair algae. I was thinking of getting tiger barbs but they nip. and maybe a molly but i dont like live bearers. What will get rid of this crap?? i already have 5 kuhli loaches, 6 serpae tetra, and 4 ottos. thx

I have brown hair algae that started growing once I added iron for my plants. I don't think you will find a fish that will eat hair algae. The best way to get rid of it is to scrub it off and do water changes. I did want to see if my silver dollars would eat hair algae though. They will consume any type of plant.

siamese algae eaters will eat hair algae, especially when younger, but I don't that's the best answer in your relatively small tank . . .

maybe you just need to step up your maintenance routine . . . and regular pruning of the worst affected areas will also help . . .

dosing with Seachem Prime and Seachem Excel can also have a positive effect . . . and if you are dosing any liquid fertilizers or iron, you might want to try cutting back to see if that helps

I also have a bad hair algae problem. However, since disconnecting the U/G filter and replacing the cheap HOB with an AC50 it seems to be diminishing. I will likely have to scrub it off the driftwood though. It's tenacious stuff.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Ameca splendens eats green hair algae, I've read.

You need to fix whatever is causing the algae to thrive, though. Too much light, lights on for too long, too much fertilizer, low CO2, etc. I can't remember what is supposed to cause hair algae though.

i had crazy hair algae, i mean, it was so bad that i was thinking of getting rid of my plants and just having some basic hardscape with some big fish, than guy at lfs recommended using flourish excel, he told me to double the regular dose, it basically solved the problem in a week or so, hope it helps

yeah that works. I dosed excel when i had a bad hair algae problem and it didnt go away. I doubled the dose and thats when it started turning red and dying off.

High phosphates are a reason for hair algae... im pretty sure. but low co2 or low nutrients will cause it. Iron doesn't have anything to do with it, like someone said.

The only thing you can do it pull it off and battle it when you see it start. otherwise it will just overrun the tank and you wont feel like doing anything about it anymore.
