At 1st it was just like discus, in that they were eating slime, but it escalated into eating big ho;es in his side that are now almost entirely healed, you can see a little pink yet.

about this size, a few hours and he would have been a goner.

He is gorgeous.I had a simalar thing happen with a male synspilum and his offspring.I doubled up on the feedings of brine shrimp and crushed pellets and they left him alone although it wasn't to the extent you experienced.
 
They can be mean as the name implies, I was feeding peas the other day and he jumped out of the water, bit my finger almost to the 2nd joint and hung on. Had to shake him off, only a flesh wound but itched a couple days, I was very proud of him.
They are in a 150 gal tank, when I 1st put the pair together, I added six 4" bifas as targets, because I had many, and they are fast. Only one made it, and it was because it managed to hole up in a pile of rocks, and never came out.
