Half and Half coloration.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congo is an F1 Black Gorillus umbee. The back half is his normal coloration. The half and half started just recently; with the addition of a new female. He is able to go back to full coloration; when he's not so worked up.

It's believed to be a form of nerve damage when part of a cichlid turns black. Sometimes it's half their body, sometimes it's one side of their face, etc. People describe it as bruising sometimes but I don't think that's actually what it is. It usually happens after an injury, like slamming into the glass or hitting themselves on something. Sometimes it goes away and sometimes it doesn't. It'd be odd if he could turn it on and off, though.

JayTee,

This is what I've also heard, I've had Venustus do that to half their head on one side. Also seen other CA/FH posted on FB. Hope he's ok, he's a studly looking Gorillus Bro! GL

I'm not sure what really causes this, but if it were nerve damaged it would be irreversable so it wouldn't just simply go away. Maybe a sudden change in diet, temperature, or water conditions???

generally speaking about nerve injuries: at a stage where they are only being partially affected, symptoms can come and go.

Thanks, AJ. I think he's fine. It seems to be mood related.

The only thing that has changed was the addition of the female.

Interesting. I'll keep the thread posted as I do more observations.

My robertsoni was a one time deal. She did this for 2 days and never did it again in the 7-8 years I've owned her. I don't think she was ever injured other than some torn fins. Would that do it?
