I have a 29gal. that I currently keep 5 frogs in. Half the tank is gravel and the other water. I have a albino cory and a tetra that seem to like it. My question is what kind of substrate can I use to be able to use live plants? I also want to make the water deeper for a cichlid any suggestions which one? Henryb

Now when you say 1/2 water and one 1/2 gravel is the gravel secured i place by anything?
Is the tank divided back to front, or side to side? Any way one way to do this is to place a food grade plastic boin the tank as a stand for your gravel. Holes can be cut in the sides of the box for water flow and as cave for you fish and gravel can be silicone glued to exposed sides to disguise them. glue a lip of pebbles on the lid to retain your gravel so that they barely rise above the water level. I would put small plants potted in shallow containers and snugged down into the gravel. An inch or two of gravel on the tank bottom, an 10" high box, and an inch or two of sloping gravel on top of that would giv you some usable depth and still leave some space for plants while giving you around 12-14 gallons of usable water.

If you have and I am taking a stab here but a fire belly toad they can live in a true aquatic tank and they tend to love it you just need a floating island and then you can fill the tank to 80%

That sounds like a really cool setup. Just remember that tetras as well as corydoras are schooling fish. They need to be kept in groups of at least 5 each. Also, depending on what frogs you have, the tetras may be considered frog food sooner or later.
Regarding your question on substrate: Use laterite for the bottom and just cover it with regular gravel. Good plant species for you might be Echinodorus, since they grow submersed as well as emersed and they are not overly demanding. Just make sure that the gravel is secured and doesn't slide.
