Half sand & Gravel, Will it work?

I'd like to switch over to sand from gravel but I love love love the air beads (And clarity of water) with use of the under gravel filter. I also have a wet/dry filter but I hear our not so furry friends can kick up the sand and it'll get in the filter and clog it up and I know my eels will be all over that task BUT if I could do half the tank sand and half gravel I could just keep the filter over the gravel and not really worry about it.

My other concern is cleaning sand, I've never had any experience with it, is it cleaned with a syphon as well or just left alone?

Any thoughts?

I have a 125 with about 1/3 sand and 2/3 gravel and no matter what you do the sand will travel. Eventually I will switch to all sand in this tank.

I have to agree with above eventually they are going to mix together.

Balls. What kind of filtration do you use with your sand?

I wouldn't mix it. Sand is hard enough to clean thoroughly as it is, if you mix it with gravel it will be very difficult. I'd stick to just one or the other.
