Why cant i just go to the store and buy a cheap halide shop light and replace the bulb? I can get a 250watt fixture at Lowes for $5, or a 150watt "aquarium" fixture for $150.

Might have to do with high humitity. I've never used them but is there a difference in the bulbs and how they need to be driven?

Who said you cant? I got 4 3" guys at Lowes for $25 on my 180gallon.
Do you use the same bulbs? I need one on my reef tank but cant afford the rediculously overpriced ones at my lfs.

Mine is on a freshwater tank but yes i did use the same bulbs but they have a green light that I hate. It makes my water look green but if you look in my sump it is clear.
