i am setting up a 125 wide and would like to do some plants in one end and open water on the other. has anyone used or know why i couldn't use 100 watt halogen work lights above the planted area. i got a set of two that are mounted together already.:naughty:

I've used them for lighting the tanks, but I had special circumstances.

Heat is the biggest problem, next, they are not full spectrum light for the plants. You say yours are only 100w? I thought they started at 500w in that style.

them type of fitting you can get.
100w.
150w.
300w.
500w
the 100 and 150 are the same type but they are physically smaller

Heat and water and humidity are all factors in why you can't use them for long periods. They are also not the proper kelvin rating, nor spectrum.

Yeah, it's the heat they produce that make them impractical for aquarium use. If not the proper spectrum, unnecessary algae growth would be another reason not to use them.

so the light they produce wont help the plant situation? the heat really isnt a problem (i know they get hotter than a $2 pistol) but the tank wont have a canopy they will be hung over it. that is if the light spectrum would be worth the effert.

also they are water resistant for outdoor use. the kind i am talking about are for shop use

As stated the light spectrum is useless, and the bulbs will not last to the humidity. The shop light type is designed to withstand water, but not the high humidity that comes with tanks.

Perhaps going with shop flourescent fixtures and better bulbs will be the cheapest / best bet. Here fixtures are about $8 and so are the bulbs.

Supend them close to the top of the water with a shield in between them. If you use chain it's easy to put a hook in the links to lift it out of the way for cleaning.
